Water-Based

Fishing

The La Ronge area has always been one of the best spots in the world to fish for prize walleye (pickerel), spirited northern pike (jackfish) and feisty lake trout. Other native species include sauger, whitefish and perch. Check out smaller stocked lakes for rainbows, brookies, perch and spake (a cross between brookies and lake trout). The fishing season opens on the May long weekend, after a two-month closure for spawning.

Boating

La Ronge and Nemeiben Lakes with their many islands and bays are ideally suited to the larger craft. Sixteen feet or better is recommended for Lac La Ronge. The use of a hydrographic chart showing water depths and reef locations is recommended for Lac La Ronge.

Canoeing

This is one of the best areas in the country for canoeing. Several historic canoe routes cross our region, and there are more than 58 approved and fully-documented routes ranging from a few kilometres to a major expedition. Guidebooks show conditions, rapids to watch for, the number of portages, the number of days each trip should take, and interesting sights along the way.

If you're looking for the thrills of white-water canoeing there are many opportunities. Otter Rapids, 86 kms north of La Ronge, is a quarter-mile challenge for which you'll need your safety helmet! Boats and canoes may be rented in town or from local outfitters, with or without a guide.

Jet Boating

While in Missinipe, check at Thompson Camps for a reasonably-priced jet boat ride. This is a thrill not to be missed, as you roar up Otter Rapids and, in years of high enough water, other rapids further upstream on the Churchill River. Be prepared to get wet!
